Mr. Razim Buksh, Director of the Fiji Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), delivered a special virtual lecture to over 40 Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice (GDLP) and Commercial Law students on October 7, 2021.
Mr. Buksh spoke to the students about Fiji’s Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism framework, citing Fijian legislation such as the Financial Transactions Reporting Act and the Proceeds of Crime Act. Mr. Buksh also discussed landmark cases.
He advised the students on the important role of the Financial Intelligence Unit in Fiji and why law firms were required to comply with the provisions of the Financial Transactions Reporting (FTR) Act.
The lecture was valuable to the students because when they begin practicing, they will be dealing with such instances and liaising with the FIU on a regular basis, whether in the criminal, private, or, more importantly, commercial sectors.
The students thoroughly enjoyed the lecture and are looking forward to future sessions with FIU.
