Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)

The MBBS programme, which commenced in 2008, comprises six years, followed by a compulsory rotating internship of one year. The programme is divided into three phases namely, Preclinical, Para-Clinical and Clinical. In addition, the programme will incorporate clinical practice from the start of the programme. This will ensure that the trainee doctors become familiar with the practice of medicine from the beginning and develop their problem-solving skills.

The ambition of the Umanand Prasad School of Medicine is to be recognized for producing graduates who are highly dedicated, effective and compassionate community leaders committed to fulfilling the health care needs of rural and underserved communities in Fiji. Being the medical school of choice in the Asia Pacific region, UPSM aspires to produce efficient health care professionals with high scientific and moral standards. The MBBS takes a minimum of six years to complete unless a student is awarded credits for prior study.

The government of Fiji, through its Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Board (TSLB)- National Toppers Scholarship (NTS) and Tertiary Education Loans Scholarship (TELS) is generously providing scholarships which covers full payment of tuition fees. The course provides an overall introduction to the medical profession within an innovative and creative learning environment. By advancing the frontier of medical research, the MBBS programme provides community based educational opportunities for learning of social and environmental aspects of disease and health, health services in the community and common health related problems in Fiji and the Pacific region. Furthermore, the course helps candidates to enhance their scientific knowledge, humanist approach and develop high ethical standards. Moreover, by being a leader and innovator in medical education, the course focuses on providing the link between professional skills and competences which in turn boosts the production of efficient and dedicated doctors and being effectual health care problem solvers.

Admission/Entry Requirements

1.   Direct Entry Year 13 (FSFE) or Equivalent
2.   Pass in Fiji Year 13 Examination (FSFE) or its equivalent (at least 320 marks in 4 subjects with English, Biology, Mathematics compulsory and either/or Chemistry,       Physics, Computer Science) with minimum of 60% in English
3.   International candidates will be decided on a case by case basis. All International candidates must attach a recent (within 3 months) Medical Report with the application.
4.   All international candidates must provide evidence of English proficiency

Foundation Science

1.   Must complete foundation science with minimum of 8 subjects ( 2 English, 2 Biology, 2 Mathematics and either/or 2 Chemistry, 2 Physics)
2.   Aggregate of GPA ≥ 3.5 without any fail grades or undeclared results and a Minimum of B+ in English

Degree level Entry

1.   Bachelor of Science or other science/medical degree with at least year 1 completed and without any pending results
2.   Must have at aggregate GPA of 3.5 and above and not have failed or repeated any courses.

Mature Entry

1.   Age limit >21 ≤ 40 at the time of enrolment
2.   Relevant work experience in Health sector desirable (Minimum 3 years)
3.   Must have completed a relevant bachelor’s degree in science/health science/public health (Relevance will be decided by the Board of Studies of UPSM&HS).
4.   Must apply with approval letter from Ministry of Health

Transfer Students

1.   Will only be accepted in year 1 if the student fulfills any one of the above criteria
2.   Confirmation of seat is subject to availability and at the discretion of the Dean.
