The University of Fiji was established by the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji to provide high quality, affordable higher education to students who had no access to other tertiary institutions. The University’s objectives include providing higher education relevant to Fiji’s needs, but within a global framework and to support Fiji’s development as a sustainable, peaceful, inclusive and progressive society committed to good governance.
The University is registered with the Fiji Higher Education Commission. The University of Fiji is governed by a Council, which consists of the main education stakeholders in Fiji, as well as prominent community and business leaders. The University’s initial development was funded by the sponsor, the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji, a body which has operated in the country for a century and has been prominent in providing quality primary and secondary education.
The University of Fiji has entered into arrangements with a number of universities to ensure international recognition of its qualifications and to encourage joint research and publications, including the University of Canberra, University of Waikato, University of New England and more. The University has various collaborations with corporate sectors such as the Fiji Institute of Accountants, Fiji Law Society, World Health Organisation, Pacific Islands Development Forum to name a few. The University offers programmes through its Schools and Centre at the Certificate, Diploma, Undergraduate Degree, Postgraduate levels, Masters and PhD in disciplines such as Accounting, Economics, Management, Computing Science, Information Technology, Mathematics, Law, International Relations, Medicine, Nursing and Language and Literature.

School of Science and Technology (SOST)
The School of Science and Technology (SOST) was established in 2005 by Dr. Ganesh Chand. At that time, there were no appointments for Deans or Head of Department. Prof Srinivasiah Muralidhar was appointed as the first Dean for SOST in year 2007. He held the position of Dean for five years. In 2011, Prof. Muralidhar, with support from University Council established the Science Department. He later recruited Prof. Mahendra Kumar and appointed him as the Dean for SOST. Prof. Kumar initiated the Physics program at the Department of Science and also secured an international grant to host first ever International Symposium on Pacific Regional Climate Change and Health at the University of Fiji. The event was organized in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Fiji Ministry of Health. In 2013 Prof. Kumar was replaced by Prof. A B M Shawkat Ali, who led SOST for four years.
Under the guidance and leadership of Prof. Ali, SOST successfully implemented two large-scale international projects; Developing Base Maps of Tropical Aquatic Resources in the Pacific funded by USAID (PACAM Project) and Renewable Energy in Pacific Islands: Developing Skills and Capacity (EPIC) Project funded by EU. As part of the PACAM project, SOST initiated courses in Geographic Information System (GIS) and also set-up a first-ever GIS laboratory at the University of Fiji. As part of the EPIC project, SOST established the Centre of Renewable Energy and embarked on a path to renewable energy and energy efficiency projects, including establishment of a unique programme; a first ever in Fiji, the Master’s Degree in Renewable Energy Management (REM). In 2019, Prof. Anirudh Singh was appointed as the Dean for SOST. He further developed the Renewable Energy Programme at the University of Fiji and promoted research in the area of renewable energy and climate change adaptation and mitigation.
