Welcome to UniFiji’s School of Science and Technology!

At our School you will not only have the opportunity to study science, computer technology and mathematics courses at both the postgraduate and undergraduate levels, but also participate in intellectually stimulating  events that inform and inspire. You will meet staff who are available and ever ready to provide advice and mentoring on how to proceed with your studies. In addition, you will find staff and postgraduate students who are carrying out active research relating to the highly relevant issues of our environment, climate change and sustainable development.

Today’s world is awash with technology, and information technology in particular. It is common knowledge that you cannot go without your smart phone or social media. But few acknowledge that it takes a lot of science to develop such technology.  At UniFiji you will be fully introduced to the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects behind the development of such technology, and the computer science and mathematics required to design, build and maintain information systems that have become indispensible to our economies and societies today.

Climate Change continues to be a growing threat in the region. Globally, a lot of research has sought to analyze and document the multifaceted nature of climate change, but there is limited research in Fiji and the South Pacific. The United Nations has 17 Sustainable Development Goals, part of which aims to combat the influence of the changing climate and achieve a more sustainable future for all. The School of Science and Technology is engaged in a number of studies under these SDG goals in the area of climate change adaptation and mitigation to address the existing gap in research and add to the scientific literature. Some of the key research areas include; ecosystem-based management, blue economy, climigration, oceans acidification, influence of climate on fishers and vector-borne diseases, benthic habitat mapping, and integrated ocean science and governance.

Renewable energy provides an important tool and avenue for tackling the challenges of climate change and sustainable development in the Pacific Island Countries (PICs).   Not only does it provide a clean and affordable alternative to the large amounts of fossil fuels we import, it is also one of the two main tools for fighting climate change.

At UniFiji we begin our studies in this important area at the undergraduate level, and proceed to obtain further knowledge and know-how through an integrated programme of taught courses and research provided through our Masters in Renewable Energy Management (MREM). This is the only programme of its kind offered in the Pacific, and our MREM graduates are already in high demand within the industrial and governmental sectors of the country. This postgraduate programme has now been supplemented with our Postgraduate Diploma in Energy and Environment (PGDEE), which offers a quicker means of obtaining postgraduate qualification in the areas of energy and environment.

The Mission of the School of Science and Technology is to promote the teaching and application of science and technology through

  • Relevant teaching
  • Enquiring research and
  • Stimulating seminars, workshops and conferences that add invaluable content to today’s scientific knowledge base.

We look forward to serving you!
