SOST UNIFIJI1

The School of Science and Technology (SOST) was established in 2005 by Dr. Ganesh Chand.  At that time, there were no appointments for Deans or Head of Department. Prof Srinivasiah Muralidhar was appointed as the first Dean for SOST in year 2007. He held the position of Dean for five years.  In 2011, Prof. Muralidhar, with support from University Council established the Science Department. He later recruited Prof. Mahendra Kumar and appointed him as the Dean for SOST. Prof. Kumar initiated the Physics program at the Department of Science and also secured an international grant to host first ever International Symposium on Pacific Regional Climate Change and Health at the University of Fiji. The event was organized in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Fiji Ministry of Health. In 2013 Prof. Kumar was replaced by Prof. A B M Shawkat Ali, who led SOST for four years.

Under the guidance and leadership of Prof. Ali, SOST successfully implemented two large-scale international projects; Developing Base Maps of Tropical Aquatic Resources in the Pacific funded by USAID (PACAM Project) and Renewable Energy in Pacific Islands: Developing Skills and Capacity (EPIC) Project funded by EU. As part of the PACAM project, SOST initiated courses in Geographic Information System (GIS) and also set-up a first-ever GIS laboratory at the University of Fiji. As part of the EPIC project, SOST established the Centre of Renewable Energy and embarked on a path to renewable energy and energy efficiency projects, including establishment of a unique programme; a first ever in Fiji, the Master’s Degree in Renewable Energy Management (REM). In 2019, Prof. Anirudh Singh was appointed as the Dean for SOST.  He further developed the Renewable Energy Programme at the University of Fiji and promoted research in the area of renewable energy and climate change adaptation and mitigation.
