UN International Women’s Day

The University celebrated UN International Women’s Day on Monday, 8 March, 2021 in great style.
The University of Fiji Student Association (UFSA) were the organisers of the event.
The highlights of the morning were the speech by the Minister of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation the Hon. Mereseini Vuniwaqa who launched the Inter-tertiary Moot Competition on gender-related themes and the Inter-tertiary Moot competition itself.
In her address, the Minister spoke eloquently about the challenges facing women in Fiji and the work that needs to be done continually to eliminate gender discrimination and violence in Fiji.
The Moot Competition, involving Moot Teams from the three Universities – Unifiji, the University of the South Pacific and FNU, is sponsored jointly by the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, the Fiji Women Lawyers’ Association, and the law firms of Munro Leys and Neel Shivam Lawyers. The competition will continue over forthcoming weeks with different Moot Problems to be argued by the teams.
The University of Fiji’s Moot Team consisted of Ms Fane Kasa and Mr Isoa Matonitabua of the JDP SoL. They were confident, knew the law and their facts, and made a good impression on the audience by their advocacy. The USP team was also impressive.
The University’s staff and students turned out in numbers to witness the event at Saweni Campus, with livestream connection to Samabula Campus and Council members to watch live.
